Chinese Business

1. When meeting with a businessman in China you should make a formal greeting by giving a handshake and remain standing during the introductions. Then present a business card. Do not put card in pocket as it is considered rude. Place card on the table as a sign of respect.
2. When conducting business do not act to emotional and do not act touchy. In addition do not say too many thank you’s as it is seen as inappropriate.
3. Some imports are machinery, motor vehicles, crude oil, chemicals, electricity, and durable consumer goods. Some exports are machinery and equipment, plastics, optical and medical equipment, and iron and steel.
4. Some of China’s natural resources are coal, iron ore, petroleum, natural gas, mercury, tin, tungsten, manganese, aluminum, lead, zinc, and uranium.
5. 1 Dollar equals 6.51 Chinese Yuans
6. When dining at restaurants the host will sit down first and then you may sit down. In addition tea is served before the meal and when eating be polite and do not act emotional.
7. When conducting business it is customary to give a gift and please do not give a clock because it is a symbol of death in Chinese culture.
8. Sit up straight and do not point with your index finger as it can be seen as an insulting gesture.
9. Dress formally and wear a suit and tie to look respectable. The way you dress often symbolizes the importance of the business.
10. The flag is red with stars in the left hand corner.
